Hey. My name is Danny. I'm a 16 year old from Newmarket, Ontario, and I will (likely) be studying abroad in glorious Japan this August (2012, in case you're from the future) through YESCanada/EIL.
YESCanada is something of an embassy for EIL. They're based in Barrie, Ontario, and work with EIL, who is based in Japan, to send students to Japan for either 3, 5, or 10 months. I applied for the 10 month program. That means I come back to Canada in June/July 2013
I say "I will (likely) be studying abroad " because I have yet to receive any word about acceptance from YESCanada. I've been waiting for about five and a half weeks, and let me tell you, waiting is not fun. Especially when you're sitting in class, and your phone suddenly vibrates and you flip out, thinking it's your acceptance letter.
But alas, c'est la vie. It'll be worth the wait.
I sound like I'm certain I'll be accepted. I'm really not. It's just that ever since I was little, I've wanted to go to Japan, and now that I have the opportunity to go, I'm a lot more uppity. Japan is something I like to stay positive about. That, and there really isn't any reason for me not to be accepted. I have good grades (except one), I'm a good person (It sounds more narcissistic that it is. I just stay out of trouble), and everything on my application is pretty commendable, such as the section that asks for favorite classes. I said math, science and tech related classes. That's the truth. Scout's honor. I also made my letter to the potential host family very personal, yet still keeping everything neat and knowing my boundaries.
Knowing how I type, some things I typed probably don't flow together well. I'm a grammar Nazi, not a paragraph structure Nazi. Whatya want from me? Anyways, feel free to comment if you have something you want to ask. I'll probably end up answering. I'll let you guys know when I hear something from YESCanada.
EDIT: I emailed YESCanada, and they said exactly what I was thinking: last week, they had a ton of students arrive in Japan (some study abroad organizations will send two groups: one in March, and one in August), so I imagine they're up to their ears in work.
What can ya do? Chances are I'll be accepted, so I can wait an extra week or two.
Danny! Glad you started a blog! I'm 100% sure you will get accepted ;) I think that having a personal host family letter helped me get accepted (of course, like you said, staying within the boundaries).
